Product Description
The image depicting the single hare is taken from a Romano British Brooch, found in Scotland so it is possibly a reworking of and early Pictish symbol. These brooches were popular among both Romans and locals.
The Tinners Rabbit design featuring three rabbits appears as a carving on many church roof bosses in southern England, particularly around Dartmoor. In a global context, the symbol is far more ancient and is found across Europe to Southern Russia, Iran, Nepal and China with meanings ranging from divination to resurrection. Maybe the symbol traces an ancient trade route; perhaps one along which tin would have been transported, hence the West Country connection.
The Hare evolved on the grassland steppe of central Asia and spread west with Neolithic man. The original British Hares were the mountain creatures confined to the Scottish Highlands and now the English Peak District.
The Brown Hare was introduced at the time of the Romans, or perhaps a little earlier, maybe up to 2000 years ago.
All our beer tankards and jacks are handmade from natural materials which can never be consistent in colour. Whilst every endeavour is made to control colour consistency, each item is offered as an individual piece. However, it will always be the actual colour ordered.
If you would prefer a personalised beer tankard or jack, please do use the “Add Personalisation” option above. More information regarding personalisation can be found here.
Historically, leather tankards were lined with either boiled Resin of the birch tree, Brewer’s Pitch, or Beeswax. Our full grain leather drinking vessels are lined with an epoxy resin to echo the historic use of resin whilst having the visual appearance of Brewer’s pitch. The resin we use is fully certified for use in both the food and alcohol industries.
