Leather Tankard & Jack Durrow Cross - Hand Carved

The cross is taken from the centre of an ornamental carpet page in the Book of Durrow which is a late 7th century, Irish/ Northumbrian work now in the library of Trinity College, Dublin.  The book was donated by Henry Jones who was appointed vice-chancellor of the university in 1646, who also donated the Book of Kells.

This version of our Durrow Cross is hand carved  as detailed in the photos above.

History asserts that Columba dictated and directed the work, destined for use in the monastery at Durrow in Ireland. It is probable that most of the text and illumination was executed on Lindisfarne, one of the most sophisticated scriptoria in the 6th/9th centuries, supplying books as far away as Rome

All our beer tankards and jacks are handmade from natural materials which can never be consistent in colour. Whilst every endeavour is made to control colour consistency, each item is offered as an individual piece. However, it will always be the actual colour ordered.

Historically, leather tankards were lined with either boiled Resin of the birch tree, Brewer’s Pitch, or Beeswax. Our full grain leather tankards and jacks are lined with an epoxy resin to echo the historic use of resin whilst having the visual appearance of Brewer’s pitch. The resin we use is fully certified for use in both the food and alcohol industries.

Delivery

In the run up to Christmas we have a large stock of our hand carved items. However, as we are now attending York Christmas Market until 22rd December 2023, we will be unable to make any more carved stock before Christmas.

We will mark items as “out of stock” as we go along.
