Knot work interlacing's are peculiar to the Pictish school of Celtic Art. The intricate, mathematical and abstract designs exist because the imitation of the works of God (whichever one) was forbidden. Until the Christian era even vegetation was forbidden as motif to the Pict.

As a symbol of continuity, interlacing knot work is found on stones, metal work, and manuscripts. Different geographical areas have distinctly differing styles.

This hand carved design is a knot incorporating four dragons and is from the Shandwick Stone, a standing stone in Scotland
