Knot work interlacing's are
peculiar to the Pictish school of Celtic Art. The
intricate, mathematical and abstract designs exist because the
imitation of the works of God (whichever one) was forbidden.
Until the Christian era even vegetation was forbidden as motif
to the Pict.
As a symbol of continuity, interlacing knot work is found on
stones, metal work, and manuscripts. Different
geographical areas have distinctly differing styles.
This hand carved design is a knot incorporating four dragons and
is from the Shandwick Stone, a standing stone in Scotland
