The Hare evolved on the grassland steppe of central Asia and spread west with
Neolithic
man. The original British Hares were the mountain creatures confined to the Scottish Highlands and now the English Peak District.
The Brown Hare was introduced at the time of the Romans, or perhaps a little earlier, maybe up to 2000 years ago.
The image depicting the single hare is an early Pictish symbol. The Tinners
Hare design appears as a carving on many church roof bosses around Dartmoor.
In a global context, the symbol is far more ancient and is found across
Europe to Southern Russia, Iran, Nepal and China with meanings ranging from
divination to resurrection. Maybe the symbol traces an ancient trade route;
perhaps one along which tin would have been transported, hence the West
Country connection
