Hand Carved Durrow Cross

Taken from the centre of an ornamental carpet page in the Book of Durrow, a late 7th century, of Irish/Northumbrian, work and now in the library of Trinity College, Dublin. It was given by Henry Jones who was appointed vice-chancellor of the university in 1646 and who also donated the Book of Kells.

History asserts that Columba dictated and directed the work, destined for use in the monastery at Durrow in Ireland. It is probable that most of the text and illumination was executed on Lindisfarne, one of the most sophisticated scriptoria in the 6th/9th centuries, supplying books as far as Rome.
