Typical dog motif used extensively in the Book of Kells; Second half of the 8th Century/early 9th Century. The dating of the work cannot be certain and neither can its place of origin. Whilst there is a strong wish amongst romantic historians that is was done on Lindisfarne or at Jarrow the illumination does not conform easily with Northumbrian work - unlike the Book of Durrow. It is suggested, therefore, that the work started at the Columban scriptorium on Iona and transferred (unfinished) when the Columban centre moved to Kells in 806 where it was completed. The book now rests in the Library of Trinity College, Dublin.
