The cross is taken from the centre of an ornamental carpet page in the Book of Durrow which is a late 7th century, Irish/ Northumbrian work now in the library of Trinity College, Dublin. The book was donated by Henry Jones who was appointed vice-chancellor of the university in 1646, who also donated the Book of Kells.
History asserts that Columba dictated and directed the work, destined for use in the monastery at Durrow in Ireland. It is probable that most of the text and illumination was executed on Lindisfarne, one of the most sophisticated scriptoria in the 6th/9th centuries, supplying books as far away as Rome.
